Somewhere My Love

This is an older project that the kids told me to put some extra elements on. Ro said some mushrooms, Gil said another branch and a bird. My minimalist wants to say no, but this time they were right.

It's a music box pin cushion that plays, Somewhere My Love.

I'm glad I've finally finished it!

Something For Me Addition

 How about a music box...

...installed in a candy tin...

...with a platform that spins...

...and a few pins?

Rethinking Something For Me

I started out with the intention of making myself a utilitarian, decorative, hidden, pin cushion. I think I'm giving up on the hidden part. Above I started out making a hinge to connect the trunk with the top. It didn't sit right.

Next I sewed buttons on either side of the trunk. I tried attaching a crochet chain through the top, to loop over the buttons. I would have needed to sew 4 buttons with corresponding loops to make it secure.

That's when I decided to felt the damned top to the trunk. I'm not completely discouraged.  I'm going to continue to make a woodland base for it.

Who knows what I'll do to it next???

Changing Something For Me

This project is a challenge at every turn. Above I'm about to begin felting, remember I've covered a cardboard tube with poly batting.

I actually got quite far with it by felting sideways but finally gave up the idea...

...and cut the stupid thing off! My wonderful open tube idea was not gonna work either. Too small, too restrictive, too precarious. Would have been as hard to get into as my Altoids box!

So back to the drawing board.

Having the felting stand alone was so much easier...

...and it wasn't hard to felt back on a tube. A tube which is uncut along the edge.

I'll think of another way to hide my needles.

Maybe in the top!

Have you guessed what I'm attempting to make yet?

My Florida mom suspects that this project, in and of itself, will attract cats to it. I'm sure she's right.

Something For Me

Let me tell you the goal here, I'd like an attractive pin cushion for the living room. At the moment I use an Altoids box, it keeps small items from getting lost or molested by cats. But every time I go for a needle it takes time digging it out. I'd like to make a pin cushion that protects my needles and keeps them out of site.

Here I have a sturdy cardboard tube I've cut at 4 1/2". I cut that in half long ways into 2 pieces. I lined the inside of the 2 pieces of cardboard with 1 piece of brown felt, lining both halves to form a hinge on one side. This part of the project will hide my needles.

I've then wrapped my lined tube with poly batting. I'm hoping this allows me to needle felt on top of this form. I also plan on cutting the tube along it's open part later during the felting process. Next to that is a round flatted form I've made with fiberfill. I took some thread around it to keep it's shape. Can you guess what I'm making yet?

Time to needle felt.
